August 2010 Edition.

August 2010 edition

Now that the 2010 Soccer World Cup in the "new" South Africa is over we can perhaps sit back and analyse what actually happened.

In the June edition of the SCN we stated that we never expected the tournament to begin, but once it had then FIFA would undoubtedly ensure that it muddled through to the end. In this revised prediction we were of course correct, but in at least two of the other predictions which we made in June's SCN we have been proved right as well.

Firstly there were a multitude of problems and failures surrounding the World Cup competition which were under-reported - and in some cases unreported - by the international media. In July's SCN we reported 1) how there had been massive strikes by security staff, 2) an armed robbery and sexual assault of a group of Australian supporters at Nelspruit, 3) how England players were robbed of their personal belongings (including underwear!) at their Rustenburg base, and 4) how less than 200,000 overseas supporters had turned up in South Africa, rather than the 500,000 anticipated - all occurrences which were hardly mentioned in the international media.

We have subsequently heard of another barely reported development however, namely some very candid and revealing comments made by the Paraguay captain and goalkeeper Justo Villar. In "The Guardian" (of all newspapers!) of 6th July Villar is reported as having said: "FIFA only care about the stadiums and what you see on TV", and: "I think South Africa weren't prepared to host the World Cup. A load of things happened. Like in the first game, against Italy, when we had to go to the hotel, the bus broke down - a new bus - and we had to wait 45 minutes and we had to go in taxis". The full article about Villar's comments can be found at :-

Secondly it seems certain that there was an escalation in farm attacks and urban assaults and robberies in areas away from the main World Cup centres, as police manpower was heavily concentrated upon protection visiting teams, officials and supporters. Our friends from CensorBugBear have informed us of a very informative and extensive web-site which details the ongoing quasi-genocide campaign against Whites which recorded all these attacks, and this can be found at :-

So now that FIFA have managed to micro-manage the tournament to a natural conclusion what will be its legacy? On the playing-side it is widely acknowledged that in the whole history of Soccer World Cups the 2010 competition was one of the most unexciting and unmemorable ever. Our congratulations are of course extended to the Spanish team upon winning the tournament, but apart from Spain no-one else can really look back upon the finals (with the possible exceptions of Paraguay, Uruguay and a German octopus) with any form of pleasure. This perhaps could prove a blessing, as it will ensure that "South Africa 2010" will not feature very highly in the pantheon of World Cup history, and will quickly be forgotten. The widely predicted "African breakthrough" also never occurred, so if African teams are not able to make an impact upon their own soil then it is very doubtful whether they will ever do so. The Spanish team were however happily spared the indignity of being presented with the trophy by a terrorist leader, it instead being presented by Sepp Blatter himself - thus confirming just how dominant FIFA actually were in organising the competition. It was also significant to note that the Spanish team were back in Madrid with their trophy less than 24 hours after winning; they seemingly couldn't wait to get out of the disintegrating "new" South Africa fast enough!

All eyes now of course turn to Brazil - the second home of soccer - for the 2014 tournament. It goes without saying that these finals - being held in a first-world country - will be a far better organised, exciting and safer festival. We cannot wait!

The Springbok Club/ELC were most honoured to be able to welcome Mr. John Cormac Seekings as guest speaker for their annual Rhodes & Founders celebration buffet last month. Mr. Seekings has written an acclaimed biography of the famed Cape entrepreneur and adventurer Charles Rudd (who of course accompanied Cecil John Rhodes on the Pioneer Trek which established Rhodesia in 1890) entitled "Rudd: The Search for a Cape Merchant". Mr. Seekings certainly didn't disappoint, as he gave a most captivating illustrated talk about the life, times and family history of Charles Rudd.

The Springbok Club/ELC will be staging a trip to Bedford and Hatfield on Saturday 21st August in order to visit firstly the RLI Museum at the RAF Association building in Bedford, and then the famous Rhodie "Troopie" Statue which now stands at Hatfield House.

All those who anticipate travelling by train to this event should either rendezvous by the relevant ticket barrier at St.Pancras Station at approximately 11.20 hrs (to catch the 11.30 hrs train to Bedford), or in the foyer of Bedford Station itself at approximately 12.05/12.10 hrs. Those travelling by road should aim to reach the RAF Association building at 93 Ashburnham Road (which is on the opposite side of the road from the Railway Station, only about two blocks away) at approximately 12.15 hrs. There is parking down the road to the left-hand side of the building - take no notice of the "reserved" signs which apply only to weekdays. Upon arrival ask for Mr. Martyn Hudson, who will be guiding us around the Museum.

We anticipate that the tour of the Museum will take between an hour and an hour-and-a-half, after which lunchtime refreshments will be available from the RAF Association bar. Following lunch everyone will travel by road to Hatfield House where a short ceremony will take place at the Rhodie "Troopie" Statue which now stands there. There is a railway station adjacent to Hatfield House, where trains can be caught back to London.

For more details, or if having difficulties locating the venue on the day, please 'phone 07711188430.

On Thursday 16th September the Springbok Club/ELC has been invited to send a delegation of members and supporters to attend the launch of Graham Gillmore's new book about his experiences in the Rhodesian Light Infantry and the Pathfinder Company of 44 Parachute Brigade of the South African Defence Force, "The Philistines", which will take place in central London. As the Springbok Club/ELC has only been allocated a set quantity of tickets for this event they will be distributed strictly on a "first come, first served" basis. If you are interested in attending this event then please confirm by 'phoning 07711188430 asap.

In October the Springbok Club/ELC will be addressed by a very well known South African personality who is now resident in the UK.

In November the Springbok Club/ELC will be holding its annual UDI Day celebrations, when a prominent ex-Rhodesian is anticipated to be guest of honour.

The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club/ELC will be staging an informal gathering at Canterbury during late September.

The London Branch of the Springbok Club/ELC is planning a trip to the RAF Museum in Hendon later during 2010.

More precise details of both these events will be given in future editions of the SCN.

The Swinton Circle will be holding a most interesting meeting later this month, the details of which are as follows :-

Date  :  Thursday 26th August 2010

Time  :  start assembling from 18.00 hrs, meeting to commence at 19.00 hrs

Venue :  The ANTELOPE (the upstairs Function Room), 22 Eaton Terrace, Belgravia, London SW1W 8EZ (nearest station: Sloane Square)

Guest Speaker :  Mr. CHRISTOPHER RUDD

Christopher Rudd is the grandson of the famous Cape merchant and adventurer Charles Rudd. He was born in Chelsea and obtained a BA Law Degree at Cambridge University, before embarking upon a successful teaching career. He was a founder member of the Jubilee Sailing Trust, and has been closely involved with this estimable organisation throughout its existence. The Jubilee Sailing Trust is a ground breaking charity set up over 30 years ago in order to provide the opportunity to experience the thrill and adventure of tall ship sailing regardless of physical ability. Its two ships, Lord Nelson and Tenacious, are the only two vessels in the world to have been purpose built to enable people of all physical abilities to sail side by side on equal terms. Mr. Rudd will be illustrating his talk with a slide-show presentation about the work and activities of the Jubilee Sailing Trust. We also anticipate that Mr.Robin Willow will provide some musical entertainment at this meeting.

The Swinton Circle will also be holding a meeting on Tuesday 14th September to be addressed by the current Deputy Chairman of the organisation, Mr. Gary Cartwright, who will be speaking about Europe's future relations with Russia, having recently published the book "Putin's Legacy: Russian policy and the new arms race". The Swinton Circle has also now finalised meetings to be addressed by sitting MPs in November 2010 and February and March 2011; full details of all these events will be included in future editions of the SCN.

We would also like to inform everybody that the Swinton Circle now has a presence on Twitter, on which news about the organisation and policy statements are regularly posted. This can be found on Twitter @SwintonCircle

We have recently received the following most disturbing message about threats to whale conservation from the IFAW. It reads as follows :-

"A massive new threat against whales has just surfaced - a 'behind closed-doors' proposal that would wipe out the international ban on commercial whaling!

"Thousands of whales will die horribly cruel deaths every year ... unless we stop this agreement from becoming finalised!

"Contact the German Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Madam Minister Ilse Aigner, asking her to stop the sell-out and end commercial whaling worldwide.

"This deal - being negotiated behind closed doors by Germany and other countries - would legitimise the whaling activities of Japan, Norway and Iceland - the three countries which continue to hunt whales despite the ban. If passed, these countries will all be allowed to continue cruelly slaughtering thousands of whales, legally, for the next 10 years!

"Whales already face more threats today than ever before in history from habitat destruction, marine pollution and underwater noise. If this deal goes through, it will kill 30 years of conservation efforts to protect whales.

"That's why we need your help right now to prevent the return of commercial whaling - a decision that will be made at this year's IWC meeting.

"Make no mistake, the reason we oppose whaling is because it's incredibly cruel. There is no humane way to kill a whale. In the constantly moving ocean, a quick, clean kill is the exception. Instead the animals, which are known to be highly intelligent and social, are pursued to exhaustion, and then shot with an exploding harpoon.

"So we must act now to stop this new threat to bring back commercial whaling."

Details the disasters of Mugabe's Zimbabwe, and illustrates the similarities between Mugabe's rule and that of Mandela/Mbeki in South Africa. It can be ordered on-line at: www.AfricanCrisis.org

ISBN: 978-1-920143-49-7 / paperback / illustrated
Retail price: R250.00, Web-site price: R200.00 + postage

The narrative gives the reader an overview of the history of the White man in southern Africa with detailed emphasis on the Rhodesian story through the life and times of PK van der Byl, one of the major players in a political drama that ended in the accession to power of Robert Mugabe under the auspices of the British government. By his very nature PK was controversial and confrontational. This account is likely to give offence to some because it portrays him as bluntly as he was in real life. Much can be contested about PK van der Byl but few will dispute he was an extremely colourful character with a devilish sense of humour. This memoir covers his life with a full flourish while doing nothing to detract from the seriousness of the international political and military conflict in which he was engaged. The reader will glean new information on a highly controversial subject and emerge with a more sympathetic understanding of what PK van der Byl and his colleagues did and strove for. The human tragedy that has followed the removal from power of Ian Smith and his Rhodesian Front party will almost certainly force the reader to deal with some uncomfortable conclusions, of value to anyone sincere about grappling with the volatile and deeply troubling challenges that confront all Africans today.

Elizabeth Nel served as Winston Churchill’s personal secretary during World War II. The vivid and human details of her experiences, of her impressions and memories of the irascible and loveable war hero, take up the story of Churchill’s life at No. 10 where the BBC’s impressive drama, 'The Gathering Storm', leaves off - when Churchill took over the reins of Government at the outset of the war. Finally, the author, Elizabeth Nel, at 90 years of age and just before she died, looks back across the years.

No.141 :  Mr. JOHN MIKULA of Durban.

John Mikula was the son of Hungarian refugees who fled their country following the Soviet invasion of 1956. Although his parents had evidently been initial supporters of Hungary's post-WWII Communist government, their eyes were opened up to the realities of Communism by the Soviet invasion, and managed to escape and re-settle in South Africa. John himself rejected Communist ideology completely by becoming a firm Capitalist, founding his own successful woodwork and joinery company in Durban. He was a keen member of the Durban Parliamentary Debating Society ("The Durban Parliament"), and worked enthusiastically for Martin Louw's campaign when he fought the Durban North by-election in 1976 on an independent pro-Rhodesian ticket. It would be interesting to learn whether following the fall of South Africa to crypto-Communists he managed to return to a free Hungary.

The magazine Quarterly Review was originally founded in 1809 to espouse Tory principles of the day. Although the original magazine of this name ceased publication in 1967, it was re-founded in 2007 under the aegis of former Conservative MP and leading EuroSceptic Sir Richard Body. The editor of the magazine is Derek Turner. A very in-depth and intellectual publication, it includes many useful and informative articles on both political and cultural themes. Thank you for your April 2010 issue of the SCN.

I am delighted to learn of 15,000 bikers rolling out in support of Christian civilisation and in honour of the heroes who lost their lives in its defence.

Bikers are the modern equivalent of the independent man on horseback, traditionally resented by the feudal lords, just as bikers are resented and persecuted by the bureaucrats of today. In Australia our bikers are famous for their good deeds, individually and collectively. Sadly, violent criminals with Islamic backgrounds have been infiltrating bikers clubs.

I welcome contact from all Rhodesians/Zimbabweans and South Africans who may be interested to visit my website at: http://michaeldarby.net or become my friend on FaceBook at: http://www.facebook.com/reqs.php#!/profile.php?ref=profile&id=674767500

On Saturday 3rd July 2010 Mr. Michael Keith-Smith (aka "Scruffy" Smith, aka LardBrain) threw himself to his death from the top of Portchester Castle in Hampshire.

Most long-standing readers of the SCN will undoubtedly be familiar with the name of Mr. Keith-Smith, who both individually and through the vehicle of his disbanded "Conservative Democratic Alliance" (CDA) had for long been waging a vicious, irrational and inexplicable hate-campaign against our movement.

The editor of the SCN first came into contact with Keith-Smith at a Swinton Circle meeting in 1997, when his hand of friendship extended to this new attendee was summarily rejected for no apparent reason. It seemed to be a case of "hate at first sight" with no rational motivation whatsoever.

In early 2005 a supporter informed us that a number of extremely offensive postings attacking our movement were appearing on the Discussion Forum of Keith-Smith's CDA's web-site. Upon checking this was confirmed to be the case, and indeed they proved to be not only offensive but also personally defamatory and potentially libellous. These smears were not only aimed at two of the then leading officials of both the Springbok Club and the Swinton Circle, but also at the organisations themselves - indeed in one posting Keith-Smith vowed that he would "smash" (his exact word) both the Springbok Club and the Swinton Circle. These postings not only emanated from Keith-Smith himself, but also from two or three other members of his CDA outfit, who apparently also harboured inexplicable hatred for our movement.

Upon further investigation the nature of the CDA organisation was revealed to be extremely suspicious. It consisted of a hardcore of only about half-a-dozen members (collectively known as the "sickly clique"), with about an equal numbers of hangers-on. Furthermore, far from being a Conservative organisation as their name suggested, they were actually quite weird if their political beliefs, embracing a number of both right-wing and left-wing policies - a dichotomy which is usually associated with classic fascism. (Indeed when the membership list of the neo-fascist BNP was leaked a few years later, although the name of Keith-Smith himself did not appear, the names of four members of the "sickly clique" CDA hardcore were listed, and at least one of their hangers-on - thus tending to confirm the previous suspicion that the CDA was simply a front-organisation of the BNP.)

In September 2005 Keith-Smith astonishingly turned up at a Swinton Circle meeting - a most strange thing to do as he had threatened to "smash" the organisation just a few months previously! After the meeting was over a leading official of the Springbok Club and Swinton Circle remonstrated with Keith-Smith in a polite but firm manner asking him why he had been smearing the organisations on his web-site discussion forum. Keith-Smith's reaction to this was to fly into a rage and threaten to call the police. Only the desire of certain Swinton Circle officials not to cause a scene in front of guests prevented Keith-Smith from being physically removed from the meeting.

In early to mid-2006 the CDA's smear campaign against the Springbok Club and the Swinton Circle, and against the editor of the SCN in particular, was renewed with a vengeance. As a result an expose of their vendetta campaign and the true nature of the CDA outfit appeared in the "Rogues Gallery" column of the June 2006 edition of the SCN. In May 2007 however (i.e. almost 11 months later), the editor of the SCN received a long letter from Keith-Smith threatening to sue him for libel concerning this SCN article. Although everything written in this article could be proved to be true Keith-Smith's threat did even so necessitate the consultation of lawyers - something which involved unnecessary time and costs. In view of our robust defence of what had been written, however, Keith-Smith did not proceed with this particular threat.

In July 2007 a supporter wrote to us asking whether there was any link between two other individuals who had been attacking our movement and causing us problems, a Mr.Arthur Kemp and a Mr.Francis Andrew (Kemp had been a seemingly staunch supporter when we were still based in South Africa itself, but was subsequently exposed in "The Mail & Guardian" as being an "asset" of the "new" South African security services, and had turned against us because he thought we knew too much about his sinister past as a result of this exposure, whereas Andrew, another one-time seeming supporter, albeit that he was a firm Arabist based in Jordan - though he is now evidently living in Oman - had turned against us because of our logical support for our Western forces in the War against Islamic Terror). We published this letter in the August 2007 edition of the SCN, together with a follow-up article entitled "The Plot Thickens" in which we argued that there could indeed be a link between these two trouble-makers as Kemp had clearly supplied Keith-Smith with information to assist his threatened legal action against us, and Andrew was a known member of the CDA who had posted some of the vilest smears libelling the editor of the SCN on the CDA web-site discussion forum. (As a side-note, the names of both Kemp and Andrew appeared on the leaked BNP membership list!).

On 3rd September 2007 the editor of the SCN received a further letter from Keith-Smith again threatening to sue him for libel as a result of this article in the August 2007 SCN. It should be noted, of course, that Keith-Smith was only mentioned as a common link between Kemp and Andrew in this article, and the comments about him personally were completely innocuous! This time, however, Keith-Smith did actually follow-up his threats, taking out a High Court Summons for alleged libel against the editor of the SCN on 5th June 2008. Although there was absolutely no chance of Keith-Smith winning this case, it did even so entail a great amount of extra expense in both time and money, including the hiring of a barrister. In spite of the fact that over two years had elapsed between the issuing of this Summons and Keith-Smith's death, absolutely no further action was taken by the Courts - no doubt because of the frivolous nature and the fact that it stood no chance of success.

It must be emphasised, however, that our movement wasn't alone in being on the receiving end of Keith-Smith's vindictive venom. His main "scam" was to inhabit various Internet discussion groups, wind people up (usually complete strangers), wait for them to react, and then sue them for libel if their resulting comments were over the top. We know of one man from Leicestershire whose life was completely destroyed after he foolishly agree to settle out of court to a sum of over 5 figures as a result of Keith-Smith's threats, and who lost his house and had his marriage wrecked in consequence. Another lady from Lancashire decided not to attend court to fight her case, and as a result the judge had no choice but to award Keith-Smith the £10,000 damages plus £7,500 costs which he was demanding, again completely ruining her life as she subsequently had to declare herself bankrupt (though in the end the Court was not interested in enforcing Keith-Smith's award against her and he never received a penny of it!). Then there was a young student from East Anglia, who once Keith-Smith learnt he had no assets to claim against started threatening both his parents and his part-time employers. Roger Helmer, the Conservative MEP for the East Midlands, was also a victim of a Keith-Smith vendetta campaign after he turned down a request to speak at a CDA function once he became aware of the organisation's neo-fascist connections - the judge eventually ruling in Roger Helmer's favour and castigating Keith-Smith for "misusing the legal system". Gary Cartwright, the Deputy Chairman of the Swinton Circle, and even our own solicitor, were also threatened by Keith-Smith simply because of their connection to us. We believe also that many other innocent people were likewise victimised with legal threats from this wretched man whose details we do not know about.

There are those who say that we should never rejoice over the death of anyone. We believe, however, that such was the extent of Keith-Smith's unique evil that the world is now a far better place for his demise.

We have also been asked not to dwell upon Keith-Smith's suicide because of the distress which it may cause his widow. To this we reply that she MUST HAVE KNOWN what her husband was up to with all his legal antics and how so many innocent victims were suffering as a result, yet she evidently did NOTHING to stop him. If he was suffering from diagnosable mental health problems, as is now claimed, then why didn't she ensure that he received psychiatric treatment? She therefore warrants little sympathy. Other members of the CDA "sickly clique" who gleefully joined in with Keith-Smith's smear and hate campaign against us also need to be reminded just what sort of man they chose to support and to act as poodles for. They deserve nothing but contempt.

Our only wish now is that the remaining members of the "sickly clique" make a collective visit to Portchester Castle.

Senator Arthur Lewis (commonly known as Father Arthur Lewis) who died in January was a great Rhodesian. British born, and with an M.A. degree from Oxford, Arthur Lewis was an Anglican clergyman who chose in 1975 to work as a missionary in the Honde River Valley area of eastern Rhodesia. His experiences there illustrated to him the pure evil of Mugabe's terrorists - and he was not afraid to say so! He rejected forthrightly the "liberation theology" of the more liberal wing of the Church, and although many may disagree with his High Church stance it is surely true to say that if there were more clergymen like Arthur Lewis then Anglican churches wouldn't be so empty today. His work and fortitude was rewarded when he was appointed a Senator, a position which he held with distinction until the fall of Rhodesia. Even after the fall of the country he continued working for the Rhodesian cause through the Rhodesian Christian Group. He returned to the UK after the fall of South Africa, and became a keen subscriber to the SCN, assuring us that he read every word. Our sincerest condolences are extended to Arthur Lewis's children Anthony and Margaret.

[We have recently learnt of the deaths of the leading Rhodesian military figures Peter Walls and Ron Reid-Daly. Obituaries to them both will be appearing in next month's SCN.]
